Dave woke up from working an overnight shift around noon and asked me what we should do for the afternoon. I said I wasn't sure. Dave said, "let's drive to the Sand Dunes." Okay. One hour later we were driving to Southern Colorado to see the tallest dunes in North America. As the dunes came into view, it looked more like a mirage, sand got dumped into the middle of this landscape. Mountain peaks, grasslands, annnnnnnd SAND! The dunes are beautiful and we got to watch the sun set behind the dunes from our camp. In the morning we set out to the top of the highest dune. Actually a pretty tough hike considering the sand gobbled up your feet as you hike straight up. But it was well worth the sweat and sandy shoes. The views were breathtaking and we loved our time there. On our way out of the park we stopped at a hike to Zapata Falls. Once you reach the the water, you have to navigate on the side of the freezing cold stream to get back to see the waterfall. It ended up being awesome and we were so pumped to see a the 25 ft. waterfall. Yet again, I am thankful for an active, adventure-seeking, brave, sleep-deprived, and kick-A$$ husband! I enjoyed this quickie of a trip to the dunes and very appreciative for spontaneous adventures!
